3M Performance 400 race recap

There you have at it a winner not named Kyle Busch. Carl Edwards held off the #18 to win his 5 th race of the year. In doing so he became just the second driver to sweep the weekends races at Michigan. Now we all know the ridiculous year Kyle Busch is having which has allowed Edwards to run pretty much under the radar until now. Edwards with the help of his pit crew showed they are ready to take on all comers including the championship leader.

Go REAL Big - NASCAR cars and drivers at FatheadIt was the pit crew who got Edwards out in front of Busch with twenty to go.

Trailing Busch into the pits his crew pulled off a fast stop and they knew as Carl pulled away they had done there part. Out on the track Edwards started third but made quick work of David Ragan and Dale Earnhardt Jr who had elected to stay on the track.

Edwards was out to a safe lead with six to go when Denny Hamlin’s engine blew up brining out the sixth caution of the day. Brining Busch right to his rear bumper, Carl knew he would need a great start to stay ahead. On the restart it was Edwards who looked like he was shot out of a cannon and he didn’t look back. Busch would have to settle for second but not before fighting off the charging David Ragan.

It was a great day for Fenway-Roush Racing getting all four cars in the top five. Including David Ragan’s best finish in his short yet promising Sprint Cup career. It was a pretty tough day for Hendrick teams, Dale Jr had a good car early and was there with five to go but after being passed by Edwards amid heavy traffic he hit the wall forcing him to pit leading to his 23 rd place finish. Jimmie Johnson and teammate Jeff Gordon got together with help from Tony Stewart resulting in a flat tire for Johnson and an immediate pit stop. Gordon was able to hang on for a while but the damage caused a tire to blow out resulting in him hitting the wall hard and spending a long time behind the wall.

NASCAR Notes

  • Jimmie Johnson's day got worse in the end as a late spin thru the infield lead to his 17th place finish.

  • Jeff Gordon fell from sixth to ninth in points and is now just 89 points ahead of 13th place.

  • Matt Kenseth used the wall to help him past Mark Martin on the last lap for a fifth place finish.
