A Day at Talladega Yields Busch His Second Win of ‘08

Kyle Busch closed the point gap on the Sprint leader board a little more with his Talladega win on Sunday. Under white flag conditions, Busch crossed the finish line for a win in a race that was neck-and-neck for the majority of the day. Juan Montoya placed second.

Go REAL Big - NASCAR cars and drivers at FatheadIn a race that had eight cautions and ran three and four wide practically all day, the fans got quite a show. With many analysts believing that this was finally going to be Dale Earnhardt Jr’s race, the alliances that appeared to be drawn as the field closed in on the finish line proved to be both unexpected and exciting.

Busch received pushes from both Jeff Gordon, who finished 19th, and Montoya, who ultimately propelled Busch into victory lane. Busch even had to overcome a pit row mistake that could have cost him the race. But the Toyota seemed destined for a win as a final wreck froze the field and Busch could claim the win.

Dale Earnardt, Jr. led a whopping 12 times for a total of 46 laps. Busch's Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Tony Stewart, who won the Aaron’s 312 in Talladega (Nationwide Series) on Saturday, led the most laps with 61 to his name at the end of the day.

Jeff Burton has a 22 point lead over Busch heading into the Dan Lowry 400 at the Richmond International Speedway, and Earnhardt, Jr. is 79 points behind the leader. Montoya moved into the top 12 this week after his second place performance in Talladega. Burton, who has placed in the top 15 in every race this season, continues to hold onto his lead, although it looks more and more fragile every week.

Denny Hamlin and David Ragan finished 3rd and 4th while 5th and 6th went to Brian Vickers and Travis Kvapil, respectively. Casey Mears, Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer, and Earnhardt, Jr. rounded out the top 10.
