No More “McDowell Who?”
Two weeks ago if anyone mentioned Michael McDowell the common response would be “Who?” But now everyone knows McDowell as the survivor of a horrific crash which left crowds stunned and family members terrified.
As a rookie, McDowell is currently in 47th place, 916 points behind leader Jeff Burton. So far, he has flown under the radar with his double zero car and admirable, yet unimpressive start to his NASCAR career. Then, last week in Texas, his reputation, and his car, took an unexpected turn. During the qualifying race before the Samsung 500, McDowell took a fast turn and once in the straightaway, skidded out of control and slammed hard into the wall. He slid for a bit upside down then rolled 8 and ½ times until he landed upright with fire bursting from his engine.
The crowd remained silent following the crash, anxiously awaiting any sign of life from the flame ridden car. Amazingly enough, McDowell emerged from the car moments later appearing to be uninjured and walked on his own to the waiting ambulance. He even managed a wave to the crowd to signal that he was, in fact, all right. The most amazing thing about McDowell is that he drove in the Sumsung 500 just two days later. McDowell may not be topping the leader boards yet, but he emulates the toughness and resiliency of NASCAR drivers.
