Dale Earnhardt, Inc. Racing Team Background: Dale Earnhardt, Inc. (DEI) was formed in 1980 by the legendary driver Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and his wife, Teresa. The couple started the company in a garage that had three bays and continued to expand from there. Although the company was the passion of the late driver (who died during the final lap of the Daytona 500 in 2001) Earnhardt, Sr. drove the #3 car for his mentor, Richard Childress in the Winston Cup for the RCR team, not DEI. DEI officially debuted in the 1996 Winston Cup with Robby Gordon’s Chevrolet. Other famous drivers for the team have included Steve Park, Darrell Waltrip, and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. among others. Following Earnhardt, Sr.’s death in 2001, Teresa Earnhardt took over majority ownership with Dale’s son. When Dale, Jr. made moves to try and buy out full ownership of DEI following a few frustrating years on the track, Teresa refused. On August 16, 2007, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. announced that he would be switching to Hendrick Motorsports as the driver for the #88 car. Teresa now has full ownership of DEI.
