Penske Racing Team Background: Roger Penske has been racing and winning in the US since 1958 and it is a record that certainly commands a great deal of respect. Penske started his love affair with racing as a driver before he retired in 1965 to focus on the business side of racing. He got involved with Indy Car racing in 1968 and ultimately joined the NASCAR game in 1972. The team ran part-time until 1976 with Bobby Allison leading the charge.
Rusty Wallace drove for the team in 1980 before Penske Racing took an 11 year hiatus from racing. Wallace returned with Penske (now Penske Racing South) in 1991, but this time as both driver and co-owner, and the team has been going strong ever since. For 16 years Wallace won at least one race a year for Penske before he retired in 2005 and switched roles to a race broadcaster. 2004 Title winner Kurt Busch joined the team following Wallace’s departure.
